Alice Springs: actress turned photographer

Bedridden with the flu, Helmut Newton was unable to fulfil the order placed by the cigarette manufacturer Gitanes. So he explained to his wife how his camera and light meter worked and sent her in his place. The resulting portrait was such a success that other orders soon came flooding in making June Brunell, alias Alice Springs, an illustrious and talented photographer in her own right. Her advertising and fashion shots are on show at the MEP alongside her best portraits and several nudes, as part of a unique retrospective in Paris.
